Introduction:
Metsä Group has launched a pre-engineering project for the first commercial biogenic, or wood-based, carbon capture plant at its Rauma pulp mill in Finland.
Features:
The proposed facility will be built at Metsä Group’s Rauma pulp mill in Southwestern Finland and is expected to capture around 100,000 tonnes of wood-based carbon dioxide annually from the mill’s flue gases.
The project is planned as the first phase of a larger long-term carbon capture strategy, with the potential to capture several million tonnes of biogenic carbon dioxide each year in the future. The captured carbon dioxide can be utilised as a raw material in the chemical and fuel sectors, helping reduce dependence on fossil-based products.
Metsä Group has been exploring the use of wood-based carbon dioxide for several years, focusing on its potential as a sustainable raw material for new industrial products. The company has already signed its first customer supply agreements related to the project.
The company stated that public financing plays an important role in developing new industrial value chains and markets during the early stages. The reverse auction funding programme could support the commercialisation of carbon capture technology and boost new industrial activity in Finland.
The investment decision for the Rauma carbon capture plant is expected to be considered no earlier than the beginning of 2027.
