Typical spreader rolls are assembled on fixed arched axles that have a metal bushing surface. The bushings alternate with couplers made of rubber and metal that transmit power from one bushing to the next while keeping dirt and moisture out of the roll.

The efficiency of the spreader roll is based on the roll’s arc and using the correct angle and speed. By adjusting the surface properties, steel-faced rolls can be used in all positions in a paper machine. Acid-proof steel and coated carbon steel, such as steel treated with hard chromium or tungsten carbide Teflon, are enough for most purposes. Correct surface grooving allows fast machine rolls to achieve properties beyond those of a smooth surface.
