Stora Enso Introduces Trayforma Brown and Lowers Basis Weight Across the Trayforma Portfolio

Stora Enso has introduced two major developments to its Trayforma tray board portfolio: a reduction in basis weight across the existing range and the launch of Trayforma Brown, a new unbleached tray board designed to deliver a natural premium appearance.

The lightweighted Trayforma range maintains the same strength, formability and converting performance as the current board while using less raw material. By reducing material consumption per tray, the updated range improves yield throughout the value chain and helps lower carbon emissions associated with production and transportation.

The newly launched Trayforma Brown addresses growing demand for packaging with a natural, authentic look without compromising technical performance. Offering the same functionality as the wider Trayforma family, it is the first brown tray board capable of oven heating, withstanding temperatures of up to 220°C when combined with a transparent PET coating. It is also available with Stora Enso’s high-barrier BarrPeel solution for vacuum-skin packaging applications.

"For our customers, the natural look of brown board is increasingly relevant, but not at the cost of performance. With Trayforma Brown, they don't have to make that trade-off. And with our advancements in lightweighting Trayforma, everyone in the value chain benefits from better yield," says Jaana Tani, Technical Account Manager, Trayforma.

Both innovations are based on a three-ply structure featuring CTMP in the middle layer, enabling lower basis weights while maintaining board thickness and performance. Trayforma Brown is particularly well suited for ready meals, bakery products, and chilled and frozen food applications.
