Coveris Introduces Innovative Lightweight Paper Solution
This innovative paper-based solution is designed to replace less sustainable packaging materials traditionally used for twist-wrapped confectionery products such as lollipops, hard candies, and chocolates, as well as heat-sealable flow-pack applications for bars and sticks. Developed in line with the industry’s 95/5 paper recyclability guidelines, the lightweight material delivers reliable product protection while supporting efficient performance on high-speed packaging lines.
As confectionery manufacturers navigate evolving sustainability expectations in 2026, the industry faces increasing pressure to balance recyclability, packaging performance, and regulatory compliance. Regulations including the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes, and country-specific packaging taxes are accelerating the shift toward sustainable packaging solutions. Under these requirements, paper packaging must contain no more than five percent non-paper content to qualify as recyclable. As a result, brands are increasingly prioritizing packaging solutions that are recyclable, compatible with existing recycling streams, and capable of reducing carbon emissions.
“MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist supports this transition by enabling brands to reduce plastic usage without compromising packaging efficiency or product protection,” said Melinda Bonamour, Business Development Manager Paper Consumer & Healthcare at Coveris. “By identifying the most environmentally and functionally effective solution for each application, we help customers balance regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, costs, and sustainability targets.”
Designed to meet recycling targets while maintaining packaging performance, Coveris’ new solution features a single-layer lightweight functional paper structure. It provides dependable sealing performance for single- and double-twist wrapped candies, chocolate pralines, and lollipops, as well as heat-sealed chocolate bars in flow-pack formats. The material also offers strong printability across gravure, flexographic, and digital printing technologies.
Importantly, the transition to the new paper structure can be implemented without major modifications to existing machinery, enabling smooth integration on both standard and high-speed form-fill-seal (FFS) packaging lines.
MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist has also been developed to comply with increasingly stringent recycling requirements for packaging waste, a critical consideration for the confectionery industry where product protection and recyclability must be carefully balanced. The PPWR introduces tougher recyclability standards and ambitious recycling targets, including the requirement that all packaging placed on the market must be recyclable by 2030.
“These legal changes extend producer responsibility to the post-consumer sector and drive up the costs of plastic packaging. MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist takes these new conditions into account and offers confectionery manufacturers a solution that complies with industry guidelines for 95/5 paper recyclability,” said Melinda Bonamour.
