Introduction:

In 2021, Sappi made a significant investment to modernize the steam generation boiler at its Maastricht mill in the Netherlands. As part of their efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, they introduced a new e-boiler to replace a portion of the gas-generated steam with electric steam. The success of this innovative technology has led Sappi to invest in a second e-boiler, which is anticipated to further decrease CO2 emissions year after year.

Features:

The second 20-megawatt e-boiler, set to commence operations in November 2025, will enhance the mill’s capability to alternate between natural gas and renewable energy sources for generating the necessary heat to produce steam for its paper machines.

This flexibility is crucial due to the reliance on unpredictable wind and solar energy in the Netherlands. By being able to switch between energy sources, the mill ensures continuous power during periods of low renewable energy availability and contributes to stabilizing the wider electricity grid during times of surplus renewable energy.

The e-boiler project is one of 80 decarbonization initiatives planned by Sappi. Throughout the project, Sappi experts in mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering will collaborate with external partners to modernize the steam boiler in Maastricht.
