Introduction

Metsä Group is investing approximately EUR 25 million in a new production line for Muoto™ fibre-based food packaging at its mill site in Äänekoski, Finland. The investment will expand the company’s capacity to produce fibre-based alternatives to plastic for demanding food packaging applications.

Features

Muoto is a fibre-based packaging solution developed by Metsä and made from the company’s own wood fibres. The packaging can be shaped for different customer and application requirements.

The solution is designed to replace plastic in selected packaging applications and supports the growing demand for fossil-free packaging. Muoto products also meet the requirements of the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.

The new production line will be built at the Äänekoski mill site, next to the existing Muoto demonstration plant. The investment was moved from Rauma to Äänekoski due to the existing site infrastructure, production facilities and investment costs.

The production line will have a nominal capacity of more than 100 million products per year and is scheduled to start operations in 2028. Technology company Valmet will supply the production line.
