Introduction:

Georgia-Pacific has announced a new capital project at its Alabama River Cellulose mill in Perdue Hill, Alabama. The company will invest $800 million to modernise, expand and streamline the mill’s production operations.

Features:

The project is expected to improve operational efficiency and raise production capacity by around 300 tonnes per day. The mill will produce close to one million tonnes of fluff and market pulp each year. The investment includes the installation of a state-of-the-art digester, a new pulp dryer and a more efficient power boiler.

Upgrades will also be carried out on the brown stock washing and recausticising systems, as well as the recovery boiler, evaporators and lime kiln. Once completed, the Alabama River Cellulose mill will become the largest and one of the most technologically advanced softwood pulp mills in the U.S.

Demand for softwood pulp products is forecast to grow by about 3% annually in the coming years, and Georgia-Pacific aims to meet this demand through its investment at Alabama River Cellulose.

At the local level, the Alabama River Cellulose mill supports more than 3,000 direct and indirect jobs and generates $188 million in direct and indirect compensation and benefits.
