Introduction:

Drax, a renewable energy company, has selected international technology group ANDRITZ as the primary contractor for the upgrade of its Cruachan pumped storage power plant in Scotland.

Features:

ANDRITZ will provide two new generating units consisting of pump turbines and motor generators, along with essential main inlet valves.

Located on the shores of Loch Awe in Argyll, Cruachan Power Station is one of only four pumped storage hydro facilities in the UK, playing a vital role in ensuring the country's energy security. The station currently provides reliable energy to nearly 1 million households.

The key goal of this modernization project is to increase the plant's power output by 40 MW, bringing the total to 480 MW. In addition, the upgrade will incorporate cutting-edge technology to enhance operability and reliability while extending the plant’s operational lifespan.

Pumped storage power plants help balance energy supply and demand by storing surplus power generated by renewable sources. By utilizing advanced pumped storage technology, the Cruachan upgrade represents a significant step forward in building a more sustainable and resilient green energy infrastructure in the UK.
