Valmet to upgrade automation at Smurfit Kappa in Verzuolo, Italy

11 September 2023

Valmet is set to enhance the water treatment automation solution at Smurfit Kappa's Cartiera di Verzuolo mill in northern Italy by implementing a Valmet DNA Distributed Control System (DCS). This advanced system will replace the aging third-party Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and seamlessly integrate water treatment control into the existing Valmet DNA automation system, which spans the entire mill. Additionally, the upgrade will extend automation capabilities to the anaerobic treatment unit.

The order for this project was part of Valmet's orders received during the second quarter of 2023, with delivery scheduled for March 2024.

Maurizio Martinelli, Customer Support Manager within Valmet's Automation Systems business line, commented, "Valmet has a long and successful track record of supplying and upgrading automation systems in Verzuolo since the PM 9 delivered by Valmet in 2001. This upgrade improves the automation integration in the mill, thus ensuring better scalability and information management."
