Valmet to deliver a recovery boiler upgrade to Lecta’s Torraspapel mill in Spain

8 August 2023

Valmet has secured a contract to carry out a recovery boiler upgrade for Lecta Group's Torraspapel combined pulp and paper mill in Zaragoza, Spain. The upgrade is designed to enhance the pulp mill's recovery boiler capacity and minimize emissions. This significant order was included in Valmet's first-quarter 2023 orders received, but its exact value remains undisclosed.

The primary focus of the upgrade is to augment the recovery boiler's black liquor capacity, resulting in reduced emission levels for the mill. Additionally, the water side of the boiler will be improved to enable the capacity increase. The upgrade is scheduled to take place during the mill's annual shutdown in October 2023.

Primitivo Prados, Mill Manager at Torraspapel mill, expressed excitement about the project, noting its role in optimizing the energy balance of the Zaragoza mill and contributing to Lecta's medium-term decarbonization plan. Furthermore, it will eliminate a bottleneck that may hinder potential future production growth or the use of other eucalyptus species. Valmet's reputation as a reliable and competent supplier in the pulp and paper industry strengthens the confidence in their partnership.

Marcos Gonzalez Moreno, Service Sales Manager, EMEA, Valmet, attributes their success in providing a suitable technical concept to their expertise in the recovery area. The solution offered aligns perfectly with Lecta Torraspapel's requirements, further strengthening their relationship.

The comprehensive recovery boiler upgrade includes the installation of new secondary and tertiary air systems, new black liquor sprayer stations, modifications in the water side of the boiler, and new smelt spouts. These enhancements will increase the recovery boiler's capacity from the current 420 tons of dry solids per day (tds/d), including ashes, to 480 tds/d, including ashes, while concurrently reducing the mill's emissions.
