Metsä Group’s Kemi mills are getting ready for the start-up of the investments

6 September 2023

Metsä Group's Kemi mills are gearing up for a scheduled maintenance and connection shutdown in preparation for the largest-ever forest industry investment in Finland—a new bioproduct mill and an expansion of the paperboard mill in Kemi.

The shutdown is slated to commence on Sunday, September 10, 2023, with the objective of resuming mill operations by September 20, 2023.

During this shutdown period, it's anticipated that odors may be detectable, and temporary traffic congestion may occur around the mill vicinity, particularly during the week starting September 11. There may also be odor emissions preceding the shutdown due to pre-launch preparations for the bioproduct mill.

The activities conducted prior to the mill start-up are aimed at ensuring a smooth and safe transition to full production. The shutdown will involve the secure closure of the existing pulp mill, the implementation of new investments in the paperboard mill, and the finalization of connections between the new bioproduct mill and the paperboard mill.

The forthcoming Kemi bioproduct mill will have an annual production capacity of approximately 1.5 million tonnes of softwood and hardwood pulp, alongside a range of other bioproducts, including 2 terawatt-hours of renewable electricity. This mill is characterized by its world-class production, environmental sustainability, and energy efficiency. Notably, despite the significant increase in production capacity, the mill's emissions will remain below the limits specified in the existing environmental permit for the current Kemi pulp mill.

Furthermore, at the Kemi paperboard mill, investments have been made to enhance the annual production capacity of white top kraftliner by approximately 40,000 tonnes. These investments will result in a 40% reduction in water consumption and a 5% reduction in energy usage per tonne of paperboard produced, contributing to enhanced sustainability.

These investments represent a significant stride toward Metsä Group's sustainability objectives for 2030 and will reinforce their commitment to supporting their customers in their pursuit of sustainable business practices.
