Ingevity Announces Renewable Energy Project To Reduce Carbon Emissions For United States Manufacturing Locations

16 August 2023

Ingevity Corporation has announced the establishment of a renewable product purchase agreement (RPPA) with a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC. This collaboration aims to generate renewable energy that offsets Scope 2 emissions associated with Ingevity's manufacturing sites in the United States.

With a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and achieving carbon neutrality for absolute GHG emissions from its manufacturing operations by 2050, Ingevity is focused on decarbonization through the increased integration of renewable energy into its operations. This partnership with NextEra Energy Resources aligns with Ingevity's sustainability objectives by enhancing the availability of renewable energy in the U.S.

John Fortson, President, and CEO of Ingevity, emphasized the company's roots in using renewable resources for its chemistries and materials. He described the collaboration with NextEra Energy Resources to develop a solar facility in a high-electricity-demand location in the U.S. as a logical extension of Ingevity's sustainability efforts. Fortson highlighted the importance of achieving carbon neutrality to benefit both their operations and the industries that rely on their products.

As part of the agreement, Ingevity will gain access to 85 megawatts of capacity from a forthcoming NextEra Energy Resources solar facility to be built in North Texas. By combining Ingevity's commitment with NextEra Energy Resources' expertise in renewable energy, the project will significantly contribute to sustainable energy generation in Texas.

Rebecca Kujawa, President, and CEO of NextEra Energy Resources, emphasized their ongoing collaboration with Ingevity to develop customized solutions aligned with their goals. She pointed out that a solar project of this magnitude is equivalent to the electricity needed to power approximately 14,000 homes annually. In addition to reducing carbon emissions, the project is set to create new jobs and stimulate economic growth in Texas and beyond.

In exchange for Ingevity's involvement in the project, the company will receive and retire renewable energy credits. This action will offset a substantial portion of Scope 2 emissions from its U.S. manufacturing locations and contribute to Ingevity's target for 2050.

The solar facility, anticipated to be operational by the end of 2025, represents a significant step forward in Ingevity's commitment to sustainability and carbon neutrality.
