FM Timber and Loimua to cooperate in the energy production of Pihtiputaa sawmill

5 January 2024

FM Timber Oy and Loimua Oy have entered into a long-term energy production cooperation agreement for Pihtiputaa sawmill starting on 29 December 2023. With the cooperation agreement, Loimua acquires the production infrastructure related to the energy production and district heat production of FM Timber's Pihtiputaa sawmill. In the future, Loimua will be responsible for the heat production of the Pihtiputaa sawmill, the operation and maintenance tasks of the sawmill's heating facilities, and the development of operations. In addition to the sawmill, heat is also produced for the Pihtiputa municipality's district heating network.

FM Timber delivers the biofuels used in the sawmill's heating plants to Loimua. Biofuels are by-products generated in FM Timber's wood procurement and sawing operations, the utilization of which enables carbon-neutral heat production and thus also supports the realization of climate goals.

The heating plants of the Pihtiputaa sawmill are connected to the central control room in Loimua, from where production is monitored and optimized around the clock.

"The collaboration supports our planned growth goals and gives us the opportunity to focus better on our core business and strengthen it. We are very satisfied that we can develop our operations in cooperation with a competent energy partner", comments FM Timber CEO Sami Kähärä.

"We are excited about the cooperation and the opportunity to develop the energy production of FM Timber's sawmill and Pihtiputaa's district heating. The utilization of by-products in energy production and thus the supply of carbon-neutral thermal energy also perfectly meets the demands of the circular economy," says Henrik Vasama, Business Director responsible for industrial energy services at Loimua.
