Billerud Korsnäs considers installation of new board machine at Gruvön mill

26 August 2015

Billerud Korsnäs is considering to install a new board machine with a capacity of 500,000 tpy at its Swedish Gruvön mill. Changes to the structure of the company's packaging paper operations are also being considered.

Swedish packaging paper and board producer Billerud Korsnäs wants to explore opportunities to respond to demand growth while at the same time streamline and further improve its production structure. The company announced it is launching two feasibility studies, one regarding investment into a new board machine at its Swedish site in Gruvön, and the other regarding a streamlining and development of the production structure for packaging papers. A potential investment decision is to be taken during 2016 at the earliest.

Billerud Korsnäs reported that demand for liquid packaging board and other virgin fibre board was increasing, leading the company to consider the installation of a new board machine in Gruvön. The BM would become one of the most cost efficient in the world with a capacity of approximately 500,000 tpy of liquid packaging board, cartonboard, food service board and white kraftliner, the company said.

An investment decision would also include a streamlining of the production structure within the business area Packaging Paper as the current production of kraft papers at the Gruvön site would be discontinued and replaced by production at other Billerud Korsnäs units, said the board maker.
