Asia Pulp & Paper Group (APP) is to plant 10,000 seedlings of Meranti tree in degraded areas of the Giam Siak Kecil wildlife reserve, Riau, Sumatra, as the company says in the press release received by Lesprom Network.

The area will consist of 24 hectares within the core zone of Giam Siak Kecil in Humus District, Bengkalis, and one hectare in the conservation area of Rasau Kuning District, Siak.

The initial planting programme will last for one year, followed by two years of maintenance for the planted seedlings, and then an assessment to determine if further maintenance of the trees is required.

Part of a Sinar Mas Forestry (SMF) programme, the tree planting initiative is led by APP and is being coordinated alongside similar projects being delivered by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) and the Forestry Research and Development Agency in Riau Kuok (Forda Kuok).

The organizations will be exchanging information as well as conducting combined excursions into the field to source the appropriate native species of tree to be planted.

Suhendra Wiriadinata, Director of APP, said: "We are delighted to have the support of the ITTO and Forda Kuok in this program. This initiative is designed to encourage cross-sector partnerships and collaboration, from the sharing of information about government policies to the development of best practice conservation methods. It is hoped that this way of working can be a model for other industries to follow as they start similar initiatives to restore forests in Indonesia."

Asia Pulp & Paper Group (APP) APP Group is a pulp and paper company vertically integrated in the world, with a total combined production capacity of pulp, paper, and the annual conversion products of more than 18 million tons.
