ANDRITZ to rebuild Holmen paper machine for flexible production of book and packaging paper

11 October 2023

Holmen Paper has taken a significant step following its recent successful foray into the packaging market with an innovative lightweight corrugated board product. The upcoming rebuild of PM52 will equip Holmen Paper with the capacity to boost fluting production for corrugated boxes. ANDRITZ is set to implement a sophisticated technology concept designed to facilitate seamless transitions between the production of various paper grades.

Gerald Steiner, ANDRITZ Vice President Paper and Board, underlines the distinctive requirements of containerboard and book paper production. Containerboard demands exceptionally high dewatering capacity and specific strength properties, while book paper necessitates exceptional formation and consistent filler retention.

Ola Schultz-Eklund, Senior Vice President Technology at Holmen Group, expresses confidence in ANDRITZ's solution, citing successful pilot trials that demonstrated its compatibility with Holmen's demanding standards. The solution offers the flexibility required for increased production.

ANDRITZ's involvement will encompass comprehensive services for the rebuild, encompassing engineering and installation. The supply package includes innovative key components for various sections of the paper machine, aligning with Holmen's stringent quality criteria. A central aspect of the rebuild is the conversion of the existing former, incorporating ANDRITZ's patented shoe blade forming technology, which minimizes MD/CD ratios. The package also features clothing, an expansion of the distributed control system, and a dilution control automation package.

This order underscores ANDRITZ's established position and expertise in tackling intricate rebuild projects for innovative paper production.
