Mondi and Evonik Launch Recyclable Chemical Paper Bags

Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper solutions, has partnered with specialty chemicals company Evonik to develop a recyclable, pre-made paper bag designed specifically for chemical powders such as fumed silica. This innovation aims to reduce the environmental impact of industrial packaging.

The new lightweight two-ply bag eliminates the need for a plastic-coated layer, resulting in 30% less packaging weight and a lower carbon footprint compared to the previous solution. This environmental improvement was validated using Mondi’s in-house Product Impact Assessment (PIA) tool.

Evonik initiated the search for more sustainable packaging in 2022 and collaborated closely with Mondi to bring the solution to market. After rigorous testing, the new bags demonstrated strong product protection and are now commercially available.

Engineered with Mondi’s high-porosity kraft paper, the bag offers excellent strength, durability, and stretch. A small amount of spot coating ensures a secure seal post-filling while maintaining recyclability. The bags meet CEPI v.3 and 4evergreen recyclability protocols.

Designed to meet the demanding requirements of vacuum chamber filling, the uncoated kraft paper enables faster air release and efficient handling. Once filled, the bags are palletised and shrink-wrapped by Evonik for storage and distribution.

This innovation reflects the shared commitment of both companies to high-performance, sustainable packaging that minimizes waste and environmental impact.
