Södra Cell Mönsterås to invest in two new evaporators

19 June 2015

One step in the investment programme for Södra Cell Mönsterås is to invest in two new evaporators,* which are scheduled for completion in October 2016. Procurement of the evaporators and refurbishment of Evaporation 2 has now been completed. The contract was awarded to Valmet.

The aim of the project is to increase energy efficiency, reduce electricity consumption and obtain a cleaner condensate. Evaporation capacity will increase in Evaporation 2, while the load on Evaporation 1 will be reduced. The investment will give Mönsterås  a cleaner condensate, thereby increasing the purity of the finished pulp. A cleaner condensate will also reduce the need for bleaching chemicals, which will have a positive impact on pulp strength.

The upgraded plant will be started up during scheduled maintenance downtime in 2016, but some groundwork will be done during the 2015 stoppage.

Another part of the project is the replacement of control systems for the tall oil department and Evaporation 2. The former will be carried out during the 2015 stoppage, while the replacement for Evaporation 2 will take place during the 2016 stoppage.

*In the evaporation plant of a pulp mill, more than 90 percent of the water contained in incoming black liquor, or "weak black liquor", is extracted, to obtain heavy black liquor. Extracting water raises the heat value of the heavy black liquor for its subsequent combustion in the recovery boiler.
