Kama Karton taps Andritz to deliver new board machine

The Andritz-supplied folding boxboard production line has an production capacity of 220,000 tpy and is scheduled for start-up in the first quarter 2019.

Russia's Kama Karton, a Kama Pulp and Paper Mill JSC company, has placed an order with Austria's technology company Andritz for the delivery of a complete cartonboard production line.

According to Andritz, the new BM can produce folding boxboard with basis weights ranging from 200 to 350 g/m². The company puts the annual production capacity of the BM at 220,00 t. The machine has a wire width of 4.2 m and will operate at a design speed of 800 m/min.

The scope of the order covers among other things a new board machine, a wood handling line, a bleached chemi-thermomechanical pulp (BCTMP) plant, stock preparation and fiber recovery systems. The BCTMP facility is geared to produce of 360 tpd . Kama will reportedly use aspen and birch wood pulp for the folding boxboard production.

Last December, Kama PPM had signed an agreement with the government of the Perm region and Otkrytie Bank on financing and realising the expansion project. The company reported that Kama Karton is to receive a loan of RUB19.4bn (roughly equivalent to €300m) for a term of 10 years to build an industrial facility in Krasnokamsk in the Perm region. The total cost of the investment project will amount to approximately RUB29.3bn, roughly €455m.

Investments boost production capacity for virgin fibre board in Europe

In February 2016, Metsä Board has commissioned its new board machine in Husum, Sweden. The new BM has an installed capacity of 400,000 tpy of folding boxboard and has boosted the company's total FBB producion capacity to 1.3 million t.

Finnish paper and manufacturer Kotkamills has converted its coated magazine paper machine PM 2 to a cartonboard production line (BM 2). The company kicked off production on the converted BM 2 in July last year. The machine has an installed capacity of 400,000 tpy of food service board and folding boxboard.

In mid-December 2016, Billerud Korsnäs has confirmed its plans to install a new virgin fibre board machine at the Gruvön mill in Sweden. The BM 7, which is scheduled to start operation in 2019, will have an annual capacity of 550,000 t. According to Billerud Korsnäs, 50% of the machine’s capacity will be dedicated to the production of liquid packaging board, the other half will be used to manufacture folding boxboard, food service board, and kraftliner.
