Fire hits Holmen Hallsta paper mill

No casualties and no damage to paper machines reported. Magazine and book paper production expected to remain idle until pulp mill can restart again.

Holmen has stopped paper production at the Hallsta mill due to a fire. The blaze broke out on Friday evening in the pulp mill and was reportedly put out by the firefighters within hours. No casualties were reported. The paper machines at the site were not damaged, the company explained in a press release on 22 November.

Holmen runs two paper machines at the magazine paper mill in Hallstavik. The total capacity amounts to 550,000 tpy of machine finished (MF) magazine paper and book paper. According to Holmen, paper production will be down until "activities in the fire-damaged pulp mill can be resumed again. The company believes that at least limited pulp production could be restored in the next two to three weeks.

"An investigation into the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage is in progress. The incident is expected to have a negative impact on results for the fourth quarter amounting to SEK30m", Holmen announced.
