SWM to close cigarette paper machine in Saint-Girons

1 March 2016

Cigarette paper producer Schweitzer-Mauduit reduces capacities in Saint-Girons, France. The mill's PM 1 is to be closed in June.

Schweitzer-Mauduit (SWM) is planning to close one of the machines at the mill of its subsidiary Papeteries de Saint-Girons in southern France. A spokesman for the Filpac CGT union told EUWID that the mill's PM 1 would be shut down in June this year. The machine reportedly produces around 4,500 tpy of cigarette paper. Around 60 employees are affected by the measure, according to the union.

The union spokesman said that SWM was planning to transfer production of the PM 1 to the mill's PM 2, which was recently modernised, as well as to the company's Quimperlé site. However, Filpac CGT fears that the Saint-Girons mill might not be viable with only two machines left.

Papeteries de Saint-Girons houses three machines - PM 1, PM 2 and PM 5 - which have a combined capacity of around 18,000 tpy of cigarette paper. SWM has two other mills in France. The Quinperlé mill in the Brittany region produces plug wrap and battery separator papers on two machines. LTR Industries in Le Mans is SWM's tobacco leaf business in France and operates three production lines.
