SCA Hygiene Products announced temporary layoffs at Nokia tissue mill

21 February 2015

SCA Hygiene Products will reduce work force at its Nokai tissue mill without cutting any jobs. Following talks with employee representatives, the company announced temporary layoff measures instead.

SCA Hygiene Products has concluded negotiations with the employee representatives of its Nokia tissue mill in Finland and has announced temporary layoff measures for all of the site's employees. A company spokesperson told EUWID that every shift would be laid off for approximately one month a year. This meant a reduction of 69 man years, he said, adding that all employees could therefore be kept.

The measure is aimed at reducing the mill's costs and improve its competitiveness, according to SCA Hygiene Products. In an earlier statement, the company said that it had to reduce fixed costs by up to €8m in order to secure jobs at Nokia on the long term.

SCA Hygiene Products had started talks with employees in November last year. At the time, the company expected to eliminate up to 80 jobs. SCA Hygiene Products employs a total of 250 persons in Nokia. The mill produces tissue papers including toilet paper, paper hand towels and facial tissue.
