Fire hits Heinzel Paper's Laakirchen SC paper mill in Austria

Heinzel Group halts SC paper production on PM 10 at the Laakirchen mill due to fire. PM 11 not affected.

Heinzel's magazine paper mill in Laakirchen, Austria, has been hit by fire on Thursday evening. The blaze broke out in the press section of the paper machine PM 10 which has been standing idle since then.

According to the company, some 250 fire fighters intervened at the paper mill and have extinguished the fire in the night to Friday. There were no casualties reported. The cause of the fire and the total cost of the damage are still being assessed.

Laakirchen Papier runs two paper machines with a total production capacity of 540,000 tpy of SC paper. Heinzel puts the production capacity of PM 10 at 255,000 tpy. The 285,000 tpy PM 11 was not affected by the fire and will continue producing SC paper as scheduled, the company said.

Heinzel Group took over the Laakirchen SC paper mill from SCA in April 2014. The deal also included a sales and marketing cooperation with SCA Forest Products as well as the takeover of recovered paper merchant Bunzl & Biach.
