29 September 2015

The rapid development of the Chinese panelized furniture, flooring, packing and decoration industries has driven up the fibreboard industry during the last decade. The Chinese furniture industry in particular has created significant opportunities and market demand for MDF/HDF products, pushing production volumes in China from 5.1 million m3 in 2000 to 64.6 million m3 in 2014, says an Interntiional Wood Markets (IWM) report.

According to industry statistics, China has approximately 784 MDF/HDF production lines currently in operation. Total production capacity amounts to 53 million m3, an average production capacity of 70,000 m3 annually per line. In 2014, 26 new MDF/HDF production lines came into operation, adding new annual capacity of 4.25 million m3. The average annual production capacity of the newly added lines is 160,000 m3 per line, says IWM.

There are still 27 new production lines currently under construction and expected to start operation in 2015-2016, adding a further production capacity of 3.95 million m3.

Over the last several years, China’s fibreboard production capacity has increased by an average of 3 million m3 per year.
